We were woken up this morning by the tannoy announcement that we would soon be crossing the arctic circle again, so it was a quick shower followed by a quick rush on to the deck to see us leave the arctic behind. We look all around to try and see the arctic circle but of course we don’t really know what we’re looking for, is there maybe a big red line, like at the airport when you’re waiting to go through immigration, of course there isn’t, well not that we saw anyway.
After floating by the last couple of snow capped islands within the circle we come to the island, and the globe monument on it, that marks the latitude 66° 33′ 44″ and the ship dutifully sounds it’s horn as we effortlessly move passed on our journey south.
I’m glad that we then decided to make our way straight to breakfast rather than go to the ‘ceremony’ again, as we later found out that the southbound ceremony is even worse that the one going north. How can it possibly be worse I hear you say, well on the southward leg of the journey they make you drink a spoonful of cod liver oil, that how. As a souvenir they do let you keep the spoon, which is fish shaped and would undoubtedly be forgotten at the bottom of one of those ever overflowing draws that never seem to get emptied until you move. As Steph pointed out, she’d probably loose it like the one she dropped into her handbag when we flew on Concord!
There was enough time after breakfast to have a wander round deck 6 and take a few more photos before we were due into our next port of call, were we thought we would get off and have a stroll around. Since leaving the arctic the weather seems to have gotten slightly brighter with higher than freezing temperatures so that the ships crew have started hosing deck 6.
As we approach Sandnessjoen there are a number of other large vessels already tied up in the harbour, one of which is a large Statoil ship, and judging by the large tower in the middle of the vessel she might even be a drilling ship.
As we make our way down from deck 6 to deck 4 to disembark we notice some people so desperate for a ‘fag’ that they actually go out of their office windows to stand on the roof for their fix of nicotine, rather them than me, particularly as the temperature is well below zero!
As we disembarked at Sandnessjoen at 12:30 for an hours sojourn in the town the weather seemed to be turning again and within a few minutes of arriving we were in a near blizzard white out as we walked from the ship up the main street.
Steph obviously was savouring every moment of the snow, I, on the other hand was trying very hard to protect my equipment, if you know what I mean!
Being a big fan of Dolly I just couldn’t resist taking the following photo while we were walking up the main street, well you have to don’t you?
After getting back onboard the ship we went to the restaurant for a light lunch, OK maybe just lunch would be a better term as there wasn’t anything light about it. I’m glad that I decided to take the camera down with me as shortly after leaving the port we went passed the ‘De Syv Sostre‘ (the seven sisters), an amazing mountain range.
At first I thought that it was hardly worth going out on deck to photograph them as they were shrouded in mist and cloud, nevertheless I decided to go, and boy was I glad that I did.
As we sailed along the side of them the weather changed again, the mist evaporated, the cloud lifted and the most spectacular views just appeared. If I didn’t know any better I’d think that I was in the Dolomites. These are truly magnificent mountains seeming to almost rise out of the sea.
As if a curtain had risen as we sailed past, as we reach the end of the range down it came again engulfing the last of the peaks in cloud.
I stayed out on deck for most of the rest of the afternoon taking photos of the ship and the amazing scenery that we continued to pass as we made our way ever southward towards our final destination of Bergen.
Of course I wasn’t the only one onboard that was taking advantage of the good conditions.
The sun dipping behind the clouds during the late afternoon provided ample opportunity for some lovely sun-scape photographs.
We arrived at our next port of call, Bronnoysund, around quarter past four and stayed for about forty-five minutes, just long enough to actually catch the sunset.
The light was truly a joy to behold.
Looks COLD…but such an amazing adventure!
So who exactly is Dolly…and what do her dimples own that would necessitate the apostrophe? Not trying to be a word nerd here…just seeing if you happen to know…
😉
Thanks Mikalee, it wasn’t actually too cold and we’d bought lots of cold weather clothing, which obviously we will not need in the UK, well only for a couple of days per year.
The Dolly I like is Parton, the sign I believe belongs to a Norwegian restaurant chain. Hope you didn’t read too closely as I know there are a few grammar & spelling mistakes that I must edit.
Oh gosh no…no worries at all! Your post was delightful, and I certainly don’t judge blogs for grammar (well…unless it’s excessive abuse, which yours clearly does NOT reflect…). But as a freelance writer/editor by passion and profession, I do tend to judge public signage — and often laugh at the flagrant errors made by some!
Dolly Parton is awesome, by the way — with or without apostrophes. 😉
She certainly is. We had the privilege of seeing her live at the O2 arena in London and it was amazing to see her play 11 different instruments during the show.
Dolly Dimple was a ficticious literary character in Britain and since this restaurant owner Dolly’s last name was likely something akin to Smith or Jones, the Dimple was put in parenthesis to indicate her name was not actually Dimple. Make sense?
Beautiful photos and it sounds like you’re having quite the adventure in frightfully cold temperatures! Stay warm!
Congrats on being Freshly Pressed! 🙂
Thanks for the kind words Christy, it was certainly a wonderful journey and it wasn’t really that cold, except for the ladle full of ice!
oh, how wonderful it is to see my homeland portrayed in this way! I’ve traveled up the Norwegian coast in summer when there’s plenty of light to be found. Two different experiences all together! thanks for sharing your photos.
Thanks Vibeke for the nice comments, having seen your work that’s praise indeed.
I’ve always wanted to go to Norway. What beautiful images. Looks like the most beautiful trip!
Go you’ll love it.

I saw this just as there was a fantastic sunset and wanted to share it with you :-))
Thanks Roger, couldn’t see the reblog though.
I LOVE this post!! Norway is one of my favorite places in the world and you just made me want Dolly Dimple SO bad! Great photos!
Thanks for the comment, it’s certainly near the top of my favourite places too.
Every image is amazing. I almost forget about how frigid it would be and just lose myself in the beauty.
Thanks for the kind words> I’m not sure about the images being amazing but Norway certainly is.
Your blog is absolutely beautiful! I love the photographs. You are giving me the travel bug!
Thanks for the kind words. I’d succumb to the bug if I were you there’s a whole world out there to explore and delight in.
I couldn’t agree more!
Sounds like quite the adventure you’re embroiled in, my friend! Good for you!
It was, shall we say, a comfortable adventure. Nevertheless it was an adventure.
Great photos, the light is ‘something else’. Those mountains in img 5002 and 5010 are quite extraordinary and the apparent regularity of the spacing is quite weird. Thanks so much for sharing these lovely pictures.
Thanks for the kind words. The light is truly wonderful, and it changes constantly.
wow! That sunset is amazing. I’ve never seen such a golden one before.
Thanks Charissa, the light was a photographers dream, although I might just have tweaked the photo a bit :-))
Wow! This was a life time experience. What was the tempreture? Was it tough?
It certainly was an experience, but I wouldn’t say that it was tough, unless of course by tough you mean “could you really eat that much!”.
Temperatures varied from around +2 centigrade in Bergen to around -10 up in Kirkenes, although at times I guess it did feel much colder. I must admit that wandering around with the camera and no gloves, actually even when I had the gloves on, made it feel like I had frost bite in my finger tips.
I’d recommend the trip to anyone, it’s fab.
Those mountain shots are great!
Thanks Emilia, your work is very nice too keep it up.
Very beautiful photos of the snow covers mini-mounts. Thanks for sharing. Connie
http://7thandvine.wordpress.com/
Thanks Connie, they really aren’t that small though.
What lovely photos! I especially enjoyed the the seven mountains–looks like something out of a fantasy movie.
Thanks for the lovely comment Patricia, and yes there were pretty awesome, particularly the way they came out of the mist as we passed and then disappeared again, very magical indeed.
Thank you for this wonderful glimpse of the Netherlands. Gorgeous photos. And congrats on being Freshly Pressed!
Thanks ‘Eagle-Eye’ it was Norway not the Netherlands by the way!
Not too sure I understand the ‘Freshly Pressed’ though?
Do you see the W in the far left corner of your computer next to Chez Louis?
Click on it and then click on Freshly Pressed. It is a huge award given to only 11 bloggers once a day, 5 days a week by the editors at WordPress. Your stats should be amazing right about now!
Thanks Susie, I didn’t know about that. Your quite right about the stats, I’ve spent all evening responding to comments.
Enjoy the ride!!
Sorry, I goofed! I did mean to say Norway. Guess I was a bit tired since I got up early yesterday. 🙂
What a strange thing to focus on in all these lovely photos — but the winter coat you’re wearing in the 8th and 9ths ones down from the top is GORGEOUS.
That’s my wife, Steph. She bought the coat just before Christmas when we were in Copenhagen and she loves it.
Absolutely beautiful journey you were on. 🙂 Thank you for sharing your breathtaking photos!
Thanks Kate, it was a great journey.
This is a fantastic travel journal. Thank you for sharing all of your wonderful photos. Do you use fingerless gloves or tough it out in the cold?
Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!
I tried everything, I even stacked them together (fingerless under gloves or mittens). Nothing really works so I did get rather sore fingers at times, but boy was it worth it.
I bought some woollen mittens on the boat when the gloves weren’t cutting it, unfortunately woollen mittens aren’t too useful when you’re dangling a camera and long lens over the side of a boat 😞
Fortunately I didn’t drop it 😊
Good thing! Hahaha!
WOW! Amazing photos! I’ve always wanted to go to Norway. It’s certainly on my bucket list! I’m really enjoying your blog!

Thanks Kristin, if you get the chance go it’s wonderful, even (especially) in winter.

Thanks Nate, as you say the light was a treasure indeed.

These are beautiful! I am a WordPress photographer, so I love when I see these kind of posts! Great job.
Thanks Aaron, it’s always nice to be praised by an other professional.
Just want to share this with you –
Definition of Photography – A person who knows light, optics & mostly expose at lower or high shutter speeds by using wide and narrow aperture is a professional photographer.

Not sure where that leaves me then 😖
The best compliments! Absolutely spectacular photos, and interesting news. Planning to Italy? You are welcome here. All the best.
Thanks Roberto. I’ve been to Italy many times, north and south and love both the country and the people, unfortunately I’ll have to pay this holiday off before I can afford another one, although I’d love to come back and photograph Venice, such a beautiful city.
Now if only someone wanted to pay for some publicity shots ………..
very beautiful pictures! I am really excited to go to Norway one day! http://madrilicious.com
Thanks Martha, you should go, just remember that it’s a bit colder than Madrid this time of year 🙂
Great photos!
Thanks, glad you liked them.
Wow: crisp and delicious!
Thanks Cynthia, is that the snow, the words or the photos? Maybe all of them.
Nice pix!
Thanks
Awesome pictures. Thanks for sharing. Liked the IMG_5030, must be cold in that red house there.
Thanks, not sure that one was a house, but they have some good stoves to keep them warm judging by the ones we sat round in the Sami building we were in on our wilderness adventure.
Wonderful pics. Stirs my Viking roots.
Thanks John, you’d like the Trolls too I think.
I’ve been to Norway, but hopefully someday … but my preference would be summer. Thanks for sharing.
I think that summer in Norway would be equally as beautiful from what I’ve seen.
Awesome pictures! Wish I could’ve made it out of Oslo when I was in Norway, but my budget didn’t allow it. Keep up the good work!
Now there’s a good reason to go back.
Awesome post and absolutely stunning photographs. What an awesome part of the world. A few years back I was in Sweden and Finland and loved it, with any luck, I’ll be back there again this coming August!
Thanks Alisa, hope you make it across in August.
Really amazing! 🙂 Keep up the good work, excellent photographs 🙂
Thanks for the kind words Tom, I appreciate it very much.
All of these are wonderful, but that last one is just brilliant.
Thanks Cassie, it is rather nice, looks almost unreal but it is.

Land of the midnight sun….great photos. I know so little about Norway. And it looks different than the Canadian Arctic where I did experience the midnight sun too.
Thanks Jean, the Rockies are great too. Didn’t see the midnight sun this trip as it’s winter but you never know we might go back one summer.
Wow beautiful, love the shots of the mountains. You evoked the size so well.
May I ask the gear you were using?
Thanks Vicaky, I like your pictures of the dogs, you can see mine here
The gear was:
Canon 5D MkII
Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM
Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8 L USM Lens
Canon EF 70-200mm f4 L USM Lens
Canon EF 17-40mm f4 L USM Lens
I think that’s about it, and a tripod for the aurora shots.
I am glad you found it. The effort was worth it! Sunsets never fail to amaze me.
We were glad we found it too.
Those peaks should be called the Sawtooth Mountains. Fabulous photos, and a very good narrative.
Thanks Grandpa Joe.
Beautiful!!
beautiful sunset !
There are no sunsets like those of the Arctic. The mountains you caught in the shorts days are majestic.
gorgeous photos… love them.. its always been a wish of mine to be able to travel to norway.. crossing my fingers that my hubby would be invited to attend training there (their company is based in norway) and i will surely pack my bag to go with him.. of course bringing along my camera so i could capture lots and lots of beautiful photos like yours.. congrats on being FP.
Hope you get to go as it’s a wonderful place indeed.

Beautiful pictures! I also enjoyed your commentary especially the comment about the spoon getting lost in the drawer until moving.
It’s true though, isn’t it?
Beautiful… Mesmerizing indeed…
The picturesque location made my heart pound with joy!
Thanks, I’ll try and do some more travel posts, might put one together about our trip to India from a couple of years back.
What a magnificent trip!
Thank you for sharing your photos, they’re simply stunning (especially The Seven Sisters)!
Thanks Candice, it was magnificent. I like your musings, especially ‘A bit of giving‘
I agree with everybody else. You photos are great. It’s wonderful picture. HAve you ever been to our country Indonesia (Bali is a part of Indonesia). I am sure will have a lot of beautiful scenery be that beach , mountains and also our culture. I hope someday I see the beautiful of our country in your blog 🙂
Unfortunately I have not yet had the opportunity to visit but it’s on the wish list, the long, long list 😃
Keindahan hanya bagi orang sekali melihat. dua atau tiga kali keindahannya bekurang.
Ini benar-benar indah dan harus terlihat oleh semua orang
I hope I got that right? (It is truly beautiful and should been seen by everyone)
Truly lovely pictures and fun commentary. I don’t know if I’ll ever get a chance to go there, but at least I can go there vicariously through you!
Thanks CeCe, don’t give up hope it’s taken me 60 years to get there!
Great photos!
Thanks Heide.
You are welcome! I have also been once in Northern Norway in Winter. It is a really amazing area of the world.
Beautiful, clear shots. There is something very calming about them.
There certainly is something very calming about it all, and the Aurora just takes your breath away. I like your post about the quilting as my sister in-law is very much into that and does some amazing work.
Beautiful scenery and photography. What camera did you use? Great post! Thanks!!
Thanks Camilla, I used a Canon 5D MkII with various lenses. I like your Design Hawk site.
How lucky you are to be able to experience this! And your photographs are gorgeous! I really loved the ‘7 sisters’ ones, and the sunset ones!
Thank you so much, we are indeed fortunate.
Beautiful Norway. What is this Dolly Dimples?
It’s a restaurant chain.
Wow! What amazing pictures you made!! I just know Norway from my dad’s fishing-trips, but he never made such great fotos. If he just told me, how beautiful it is over there, I would have gone with him. Next time I will!
Vielen Dank, Norwegen ist wirklich sehr schön
Great photos from my home country, thanks for sharing!
Here’s some more info to your photo of the construction vessel:
The vessel is specially built for the maintenance of oil wells.
The “drilling vessel” is not intended for drilling, but rather it’s a subsea support construction vessel. It’s meant to perform duties such as: ROV (mini submarines used to perform different subsea tasks), diving, construction work, Installation and module handling operations, trenching etc.
Thanks for the info, I’ll pass that onto my wife as she works with a lot of the contractors on the rigs.
This brought back some wonderful memories. Half-Norwegian, I made the trip slowly up to Hammerfest in 2000. I can verify the light is absolutely fantastic.
On the way back down I stayed on the small island of Vaeroy at the southern tip of the Lofotens for a couple of months. That was in summer with all the beauty of the midnight sun to drink in.
But I have also been in Norway in the winter. I have family in Oslo where I have been overwhelmed by the different light conditions throughout the seasons.
Blessed with such magnificent nature illuminated by ever-changing backdrops it has to qualify as one of the most beautiful countries on the planet. It’s a photographer’s dream.
Now I live on the southern coast Andalucia where the light conditions are also quite extraordinary. Photos giving exceptional examples be viewed at my blog:
http://bryanhemming.wordpress.com/more-photosconil/
Thanks Bryan, you’re right it is a fantastic place and the light really is a photographers dream. Having said that, it looks like you have some fabulous light in Andalucia as well, judging by your own images.
It was well worth going on deck to take those photos – well done! This makes me want to go back to Norway again.
absolutely amazing!
Norway look beautiful. I should plan to travel Beautiful Norway. I love traveling.
Do, if you love photography and light, then you would love it.
I can say Pictorial Norway.
You can as it is.
Very beautiful pictures. I did this trip a few years ago. Also in winter. And it is really unforgettable!
I certainly will not be forgetting it for a very long time.
INCREDIBLE series, adventure and memories. Each shot individually tells a story and together, tells so much more. Thanks for sharing a piece of your journey.
~Todd
Thanks Todd, it’s always extra special to be praised by other great photographers.
what a beautiful place…..Coming soon
beautiful sight and beautiful pics of the mountains…
I wish to go there
O.
Your photos really capture the place – nice!
GORGEOUS photography! Sounds like you’re having a wonderful adventure. I’ve written a piece about my first trip to Norway (back in Feb 2011) which you can read here, if you feel like it 🙂 http://wp.me/pTwgK-4l
I’ve since been back to Norway five times and fall in love with it more each time. I’ve only visited the South – last time the Northern Lights were *just* about visible and I saw a vaguely green strip. Still, very exciting!
Looking forward to reading more about your journey!
Glad you enjoyed your trip Tiffany and also glad you like the photos.
Fabulous place, fantastic photos. Like the clarity in the shots. Good work.
OMG !! I love the mountain shots !! Cheerz 😀

Awesome….reminds me of something I did a few weeks ago – here it is –
Thank you. Really enjoyed the photos. Brilliant! Love boats – did visit Norway once but also went on a tanker to India from Genoa. Really recommend it!
This is so wonderful, the pictures are great, and your adventure is so inspirational … worthy of a book! I somehow feel very inspired by these pictures … great job there!
I was thinking of maybe chucking a book together but I’ll have to see how it goes. You might just have to update you your Top 10 Round The World Places though. 😁

Beatiful photos. Norway is also on our list of places which we’ll visit.
Recently we returned from our Australian Outback adventure. A great contrast from the current Moscow winter 🙂 http://anaustralianodyssey.wordpress.com/
Great photos of my home country.
These are some really gorgeous photographs. You’ve really made the best of the soft light and striking nature. I think they’re the sort of images that will stay with me for a while.
Thanks Sara, how are you getting on with your book?
Oh dear, oh dear! It’s so dreadful. Actually, to call it an ‘it’ suggests too much. I’ve lost all inspiration! Something’ll kick start me for sure, but for now I just want to get back on WordPress!
Thanks for asking though! That’s so kind : D
nice adventure! great pics! 🙂
Beautiful photos and great report.
I visited Tromso in 2007 and thought it was wonderful. Would like to do a cruise like this…one day…
The cruise is well worth it.
Absolutely beautiful photos. Gorgeous. The ones of the clouds over the mountains took my breath away. Stunning. -bethany
Thanks, I’m just in the process of putting a few of those through some HDR processing and chucking them on Flickr.
The pictures make everything seem so quiet. Very peaceful. Funny story. Looks like an amazing adventure…
Apart from the sound of the ship it was very peaceful, and even the towns had a certain serenity to them.
Beautiful. Your talent has captured images that a typical camera owner like myself would never get.
Thank you so much for such a lovely comment.
Love the story about this experience, great pictures to relate to. Thanks for sharing this.
These shots are really lovely – and as you say – capturing the light is such a wonderful thing to do. I try it with my own blog – as we have lovely light and lots of artists who visit for that – but yours have certainly captured that. Well done.
Holy moly, what amazing shots. Wow. What beauty. I’m just speechless.

Congrats on sacrificing your equipment to get the blizzard photos. I won’t have been as brave. I love the little red houses that dot the shorline. It looks so peaceful there.
It is peaceful and very isolated, I’m not too sure where they do their shopping as there aren’t many stores around, especially on the islands.
I used to live in Norway, and your fantastically stunning photos may have brought a tear to my eye – I have so many wonderful memories and I miss the beautiful scenery! I hope you enjoyed your trip!!
Bet you’re going to enjoy New Zealand as much 😁
Thanks, I’m sure I will – some of the scenery really reminds me of Norway!
By god that looks cold. I can’t imagine anything more wonderful than being woken up and told you’re crossing the arctic circle. Something most of us will never do.
great pics
Absolutely Beautiful.. I Love these pictures, so clear and many of them simply breathtaking!
Beautiful pics
check out my blog angeleryka.wordpress.com
Love to see those pictures since my dad did this already and wanted us to do it as well, but we only made it to the tip of Norway, so had an idea what’s coming further north, but it is even better ^^… so next destination cold or thinking about Iceland? =)
Next destination will probably be Somerset in March, so hopefully quite warm and dry if we’re lucky!
So staying local, awesome,… Just been to the Cairngorms. Motto: No bad weather, only bad clothes! =)
I am so delighted to have taken this tour with you to a place I may never see in person. Your images are beautiful and make me feel as if I have experiences this in person. Thank you.
Thanks Cindy, that’s praise indeed from someone who’s images are equally stunning.
you are incredibly awesome! what a story!! I am studying in France and from India. Never seen something like this. It seems like a dream the place you have been and the shots you have captured! Kudos!!! Loved each aspect of it Photolouis!
I will have to admit, never gonna miss your writing from now on! 🙂
Also, a great inspiration to give a new dimension to my photo-stories! I’ve been to southern Europe covering few places hunting for photos and stories! But can’t wait before seeing these places and write something on it 🙂 Great work again!!
Speechless.. thank you so much for sharing this I enjoyed it immensely..

These are wonderful photos. I didn’t expect to want to go North and face the snow so badly. ; ) Thanks for taking us along on your journey.
That last photo is beautiful. What is the name of that mountain?
I’m not sure that it has a name, I guess that it should have but I have looked at the website for Brønnøysund and can’t see any mention of it, sorry.
Oh, it’s beautiful, though. Thanks.
That place looks very cold and very beautiful. Thanks for the images. I’d love to go there but only if I had a very very warm coat.
Schitterende foto’s……
Dank je wel
outstanding…….
This is awesome! I wish I could go to Norway…It was not in my bucket list so far but will be in the top ten now..
Great photographs. Your comments make a lively contribution, so thank you for keeping us in the frame.
My brain goes into hibernation mode whenever I get cold, so this would not be on my bucket list of places to visit, but imagination is a wonderful thing. One picture tells a thousand stories, so in my mind, courtesy of the internet’s magic carpet, your photographs and lively words, I’ve visited Norway. Thanks, it’s been fun.
